EYELID SPRING

The Eyelid Spring procedure, also known as the Enhanced Palpebral Spring Implant Surgery, is a specialized surgical technique designed to address the immediate challenges of eye closure and the rehabilitative aspects resulting from facial paralysis. This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing the inability to blink and close the upper eyelid, which can lead to dryness, roughness of the eye, discomfort, and gradual visual loss over time.

One of the primary reasons patients opt for the Eyelid Spring procedure is due to conditions like acoustic neuroma, where nerve damage occurs either from large tumors or during surgical tumor removal. Candidates for this procedure are typically those who anticipate eyelid paralysis lasting six months or longer.

During the procedure, an incision is carefully made along the lateral two-thirds of the eyelid crease. Patients are ensured comfort throughout the process, as they assist our surgical team in opening and closing their eyes while sitting up on the operating table. Each spring used in the procedure is custom-made by hand in the operating room, tailored to fit the patient’s unique anatomy.

After the spring is placed under the skin, we use fast-absorbing sutures to assist in healing. While the spring may eventually wear out, it often provides many years of reliable eyelid closure, with some lasting up to 25 years. Postoperative care includes a course of antibiotics for ten days and an IV of steroids during the procedure. Additionally, antibiotic ointment is applied to the wound twice daily until it heals and the sutures are absorbed or removed. Ice packs may also be used in the first 48 hours post-procedure.

One of the notable benefits of the eyelid spring procedure is the visible improvement in facial movement on the paralyzed side, creating a more natural appearance. This improvement not only enhances cosmetic outcomes but also boosts self-esteem and provides a psychological lift for patients. Many patients experience improved blinking closure, expanded visual fields, and a more positive self-image following the procedure.
